District 808 is a family owned and operated company founded by Daniel Hi'ipoi Kauahi. He is a native Hawaiian, born and raised in Makakilo and a graduate of Kamehameha schools. He moved from Hawai'i to Southern California in 1997 to attend Chapman University in the city of Orange. There he majored in film and television production with a minor in graphic design. Living so far from his 'one hānau, (ancestral home) his desire to keep Hawai'i close and to express his own take on the Hawaiian lifestyle in wearable art is what got District 808 started. District 808 strives to be that place in the middle, the representation of what island life in Hawaii is in this modern world. A mash up of ancient and new, of natural and mechanical, of urban and rural, of the Hawaiian ideal of duality or Lua. You cannot have one without the other. We always remember our past, we recognize the present, and look to the future to perpetuate Hawaiiʻs unique culture. Everything is done by Daniel and his family. From conception, to drawing, to digitizing and finally printing. District 808, authentic modern Hawaiian and Polynesian designs.
